It’s a fight for devs, so don’t think in terms of chains and think in terms of VMs and developer environments. I see 3-4 big developer standards emerging: 1. EVM 2. SVM 3. CosmWASM 4. Move After that come some of the very specific roll-up environments like FUEL and Cairo and those designed for modular execution and proving. Even hardcore Ethereans will admit that while the EVM is the standard and is “good enough” there remain huge areas of improvement for any new VM that can get traction, but network effects are very real and heavily entrenched.
Some I haven’t seen mentioned much in the comments, but are incredibly strong teams and communities: - Starknet and Cairo - FUEL VM and Sway - Aztec Protocol for zk privacy as an L2 - Scroll and zkSync also pushing hard on zkEVMs - Mantle as an Asia focused version of Base - Eclipse and Polygon launching a Solana roll-up on Ethereum as an L2 - ImmutableX and Sorare for NFTs and gaming - Polygon Nightfall, Zero and Miden as non EVM solutions - Celestia, Polygon Avail and lots of new roll-app and modular service providers
A few years ago we thought it wouldn’t even be possible for a decade, and now we’re seeing insanely fast innovation. A lot of this is happening in parallel too with hardware acceleration, prover architectures, and more efficient zk circuits all developing rapidly. I myself think that targeting the EVM is a bit of a self-inflicted bottleneck though. We probably need a few, but I’m much more excited by zk specific execution environments like Starknet and FUEL etc.
I’m using Arbitrum, Optimism, ImmutableX and Sorare as the reference here. Starknet, Polygon zkEVM, zkSync, Scroll, FUEL are all on the horizon, but still need more time to mature and build out their developer ecosystems.

Fair, and there are some good eggs and some good technical discussions to be had. I appreciate those. On your second point, there was actually a time when UTXO was favoured - it predates the account model as the primary approach. We tried all that, and you might remember the Hyperledger Fabric days and all those experiments, which led to Vitalik’s famous critique that it’s good in theory, but a nightmare in practice due to the complexity overhead. The industry would probably have died if we had stuck with it. That said, the Ethereum community loves UTXOs too - and some of the most gigabrain roll-up teams (FUEL and Aztec) are both using them. I hope to see a lot more experimentation here!
He’s right, they’re complementary to Ethereum L1, but competitive to Ethereum L2s like Arbitrum, zkSync, Starknet, FUEL etc. Solana is terrible at consensus, but great as execution innovation. Somebody should launch a Solana VM as a roll-up. Solana is the only non-EVM chain that has been successful with adoption. We need to see more experimentation in the computation space, not less.
If you want UTXO, just use FUEL. They’ve already solved many of Cardano’s fundamental issues (including concurrency and data availability).

Correct, there’s a lot of new roll-ups launching on Ethereum in the next few months. I’m personally keeping an eye on Starknet, zkSync, Polygon zkEVM, Scroll and FUEL.

Genuine answer: Ethereum pivoted a few years ago to a roll-up centric modular roadmap where computation is being pushed to L2/L3. But actually, Data Availability is the much bigger bottleneck (for Cardano too).

I get a lot of hate and downvote for my posts criticising Cardano - but I’ve tried to be as consistent and informative as I can. Often times it’s not as much with the project or technology (which is interesting enough if they were just a small R&D chain like Ergo or FUEL trying to achieve the impossible with UTXO), but with the lies, misrepresentation and constant dishonest marketing that has led it to be priced so massively highly compared to fundamentals and competitors. Without this push back, this sub had become an echo chamber of Charles Hoskinson, IOHK and McCanns smoothly crafted talking points. “Credible founder” “Peer reviewed” “Financial inclusion in Africa” “Slow and steady” The reality of it being a fairly unusable and unscalable smart contract chain was overshadowed by a huge PR blitz (remember the Africa summit last year?) and lots of other smoke and mirrors (remember the ERC20 “convertor”) and all other manner of Elizabeth Holmes type misdirection. Last cycle it was EOS and Tron. This cycle it’s Cardano and Solana. Welcome to crypto. 🤷♂️
I was thinking of Tezos, Polkadot, Solana, Cosmos, Algorand etc - not just the EVM forks. Cardano started in 2015. Fired the dev team and started again in 2018, but still seem to be banging their heads against the same walls. Even FUEL has made more progress on UTXO smart contract platforms in far less time.

I wouldn’t call SundaeSwap true DeFi - since they rely on centralised off-chain relayers known as “scoopers” who will be run by themselves initially and then “trusted parties”. Cardano needs protocol level upgrades before on-chain transaction ordering is possible. FUEL labs have developed and proven this, so it’s possible to be done on UTXO - but it will require further CIPs.

People like to say this, but it’s clearly an issue. And if you need to run off-chain relayers in order to overcome it (although nobody has launched or shared open source code yet so we don’t even know), then it’s clearly an issue. Trying to handwave it away as if “you just need to design differently for UTXO” doesn’t hold water. This is the exact challenge developers have had with the UTXO model for years. FUEL solved it within protocol. The fact that Cardano didn’t, and then ran a testnet a few weeks before launch where devs found out about it for the very first time? 🤡
Worst ever was Etherparty (FUEL). Went down to near 0 as much as possible. Got in around .23 and if I held to today, it would be at 0.0008632. Sold that before it went sub .01 cent for sure. Loopring also did very poorly despite it being one of the only DEX protocols around in late 2017.

I would suggest staying away from jetfuel. The fuel token is similar to a Ponzi scheme. "FUEL is a transactional tax type token, and every transaction is taxed 2%. Half of the transaction tax goes to the staking pool (Hanger Reserves) and the other half is burnt forever." However the hanger reserves address is an ordinary address which someone from the team has access to and anytime they want they can take the money from the hanger reserves and not send it to their staking pool. I've asked them about it but they ignored me. The fuel token has no utility so other than the fact the inflationary, be there's no point for it to go up in price. If everyone holds it sells it which they will at some point, whatever you are holding will be worth less. Similar to a Ponzi scheme, if you buy it you'll only get paid if other people invest in it, but at some point it'll collapse, because it's all speculation. $COVAL is interesting. Did a little research. How it works: Vault token contains addresses of several individual assets, let's say some BTC, some ETH, and an NFT. The sender doesn't know the seed phrase. The recipient upon unlocking the vault token with a seed phrase gains access to the addresses of all contained assets for download to his/her desired addresses. I have to make make basic assumptions here, such as, the addresses with the assets can't be drained once in the vault, they are committed somehow, so you don't end up with a vault token full of empty addresses. Transactions are powered by another token called FUEL. It's called a composite token. Anyway they say they are going to be partnering with ChainLink to further the de-centralized nature. Remembering ChainLink itself is still working further on its own decentralization, the criticism I read of them is that they're still themselves serving as a centralized node essentially between centralized systems and DeFi - they're still a work in progress themselves. But what's interesting is ChainLink does what it does and has very little competition. Emblem Vault, the composite token being developed by Circuits of Value, no one else is doing composite tokens from what I can find. Mind you I'm just a layman. So everything is a work in progress folks. If it were a sure thing the train would have already left on it. That's the gamble. But the concept is interesting, it allows for people to do something new and convenient, and ten bucks gets you a shit load of coins if this thing ever blows up. Based on what I can find, this project still uses $FUEL as a major part of the tokenomics. Also, as far as I can see, Lisa Cheng appears to be involved with the company responsible for $FUEL, Hyperion Technologies. $FUEL was originally ICO'd by Vanbex, and Cheng was charged with either $22m or $30m in fraud. Due to this Vanbex sold its $FUEL asset to Hyperion. Hyperion then for whatever reason hired Cheng as CEO in Dec. 2019. At the moment I cannot find any information on whether Cheng is still involved, but I cannot find any info stating it isn't. This doesn't affect Emblem Vault directly but it's a point of concern. The Vault concept is very interesting. Do you have any info on this?
FUEL was pumped today too and there is literally no way you could have made money on it since a huge sell off happened exactly a minute after the pump and it fell lower than to what it was before the pump. From the list I have strong hopes for RFUEL and OGN. FUEL has its last unlock at the end of this month and then it will not have much sales pressure.
