We have a lot of respect for the team at Augur for their vision and what they achieved in a short span of time. Its success was indeed short-lived, we believe, for several reasons: Inflationary tokenomics: Augur had a model where market validators would stake $REP in order to earn validator rewards. But many staking models have turned out to be unsustainable in the long-term due to inflationary tokenomics driving the price of the token down. They continued to mint new tokens for these rewards, and activity began to decline on Augur when staking $REP was no longer financially viable, as the value of the token had decreased so much in that time. Without participants willing to validate payouts, the system collapses. We have worked tirelessly to ensure the deflationary nature of FORE is built into the protocol itself. It’s simple: as activity on the platform increases, supply decreases. Several core functions drive this as I touched on previously, but deflation is built into almost every transaction on the protocol. And instead of minting new tokens for rewards, half of the platform fees are redistributed for activities such as market creation and validation, allowing users to generate income through quick and easy activity on the protocol. That incentive drives further activity on the protocol, which in turn reduces the token supply… and the cycle continues. Scalability: One of the main issues facing Ethereum-based projects like Augur was scalability. Ethereum's network congestion and high gas fees made it expensive and slow to use Augur, which discouraged users and traders. FORE Predict is launching on Arbitrum for some of the lowest fees, and we’ve already integrated Polygon and Fantom too. We will continue to roll out additional EVM-compatible chain integrations over time based on low gas fees and user-demand, ensuring that users retain as much of their earnings as possible. User experience: The user experience on Augur was not as user-friendly as centralized alternatives, hindering adoption among mainstream users. Decentralized predictions markets in general have failed to capture market share from traditional markets due to the difficulty in onboarding newcomers into DeFi. FORE Predict will have a fiat onramp soon after launch to participate via Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Visa, Mastercard, bank transfers, and more - allowing ANYONE to use the platform. Poor user acquisition strategy: The opportunity for users to participate in markets on any event is something that Augur set out to achieve, but its broad offering resulted in a lack of liquidity and traction without a supporting strategy to bring in users in key verticals. While users can create markets on any event on FORE, our user acquisition strategy will be vertical-focused: initially targeting users interested in sports, crypto, politics, and esports around notable events. This will allow us to bring in users interested in similar markets, ensuring market participants can find markets on their desired subjects, and have other participants in which to take a position against.
I actually learned how to trade off REP token in 2019-2020. It would randomly be up over 100% in a day so ... I would sell. like clockwork it would drop again and eventually pump again so it made me some really ridiculously obnoxiously easy gains. Must've been p and d groups looking back. Don't touch REP these days though I consider it a dead shit coin. It could pump but the rug could also go > any day
I saw REP pump and dumping (its pretty famous for them) and managed to make a couple 2-3x quick trades. I got lucky though haha. I doubt I can replicate them. On the dumb side I bought into ICP and lost like 95%. 🤢
Augur aka REP Noone remembers this one, lol… I didn‘t pay attention and it seems dead af now, no blog updates in a year. Which is weird, but after they went 2.0 things started to fall apart. Thankfully my bag is tiny.
Selling alts (top ones) now for BTC dont seem wise. They have dropped much more than BTC, and BTC will never rebound as much as those. If you want to go to 2017 here was the historical prices on Jan 1 2017 vs today (somewhere in the middle of the bear market) of top 10 coins back then : BTC - 998$ -> 25800$ (25x) ETH - 8$ -> 1750$ (217x) XRP - 0.006$ -> 0.51$ (84x) LTC - 4.5$ -> 77.94$ (16x) XMR-13.97$ -> 136.5$ (8x) ETC - 1.39$ -> 15.11$ (10x) DASH - 11.23$ -> 29.40$ (1.6x) REP - 3.99$ -> 5.60$ (0.4x) MAID - 0.09$ -> 0.14$ (0.5x) STEEM - 0.16$ -> 0.15$ (0x) Having a portion of your portfolio in BTC is wise (the size depends of the exposure you want to risk), but ignoring alts is also ignoring potential gains. Assuming I invested 1000 dollars in 1 Jan 2017: btc = 25800$ (25x) top10 = 2585+21875+8500+1700+970+1080+260+140+150+0=37260$ (36x) Also keep in mind the crypto market back then was way less mature, more or less everything was experimental/moneygrab. Now the majority of the top cryto projects have defined roadmaps and business models with actual income revenue streams.

REP is real, but a failed project afaik. OMG showed promise in 2017 but plasma didn't work out as well as rollups. YFII total shitcoin.. cb needs to delist a lot of trash

I heard about Mirror (MIR) because of their synthetic assets and potential problems with regulations (also vaguely remember seeing OMG Network (OMG) and Augur (REP)), but yea, I wouldn't call these "major cryptocurrencies".

I was on a small exchange in Thailand. There wasn't a huge choice, although I did buy all sorts afterwards like OMG, REP, EVX. Then at the 2018 peak I discovered Binance and bought the top out of the likes of Neo, ICX, IOTA which went on to lose 98% of their value, lol

7 of them have boomed price wise. LTC, XRP, NEM, ETH, BTC and XMR and ... ETC. Even Maidsafecoin is now 11 cents and REP is $1 more. Who said it was a bad investment? Top 30 now (thinking about how the whole market has matured) and not having some exposure is surely more riskier than not.

Good advice...I'm getting caught up on some reading. Keeping a close eye on SIT REP. Assume nothing. Anything could happen in the next six months or so. And remember nobody knows jack. Don't stare at tea leaves and think that history will repeat itself. Things are much different than they were last fall....no end in sight for current chaos in financial markets. REP is a great example... Was in the Top 10, great project, great team but got crushed in 2018 and it's still down 93% from ATH, not even in the Top 300 in 2022...

I don't think any redditors who responded to my post in this thread are expats and understand the complications of transactions in general. The short answer to your question is that I told the truth. The long answer is that "where you live" is ambiguous and doesn't have an exact answer if you are an expat. I reside in the Dom. Rep. but my nationality and place of origin is the U.S. If I say I live in the Dom. Rep. the expectation is that I have a CEDULA, the national identification, but I do not because I am not a Domican citizen. I have a U.S. passport. If I say I live in the U.S. I must be able to show a U.S. phone number for 2FA. But I don't have a U.S. phone number. So how do I answer?? If you are a U.S. citizen and you have a U.S. identification and you live in Sacramento, CA, then the answer to that question is straight forward. For me, it is not straight forward and very difficult to know what the "truth" is. The fact is that I went throught a long vetting process with Gemini and they accepted me. I bought crypto, I made ACH deposits, I used 2FA with my Dom. Rep. phone number. Now that that phone numbert has changed, they refuse to change to my new phone number so that I can access my account, because they only accept U.S. plhone numbers. BUT GEMINI INITALLY ACCEPTED MY DOM. REP. PHONE NUMBER, INDICATING TO ME THAT THAT WOUL BE ACCEPTABLE and I had not issues with it.

It seems it's available in Germany but according to the Coinbase help section there's no option to spend stable coins. Only BTC, ETH, LTC, BCH, BAT, REP, ZRX and XLM. Selling crypto is a taxable event here so if I were to liquidate stable coins which have a set value then it's no bother (just one more transaction with zero profit/loss) but all these options seem like a headache. I'm also not seeing anything about the cashback rewards which makes me believe that perhaps it's not available in Germany yet. Thanks for the support and encouragement anyway. I'll keep and eye out in it anyway and maybe ask around if anyone in Germany can confirm what I've read.
Depends where you live. Ontario is hot bed of liberal seats. Theres people on both ends and in the middle. If you were mandated aka given a "choice" by work to get shot after shot to keep your lively hood this will sway you one way or another. This emergency measures act was the last option left apparently now the decison falls on Lord Trudy. I don't agree with the complete border blockage. For me it's the work mandates. I'll wear a mask/test and follow our REP passport shit. Making me get something I don't want is not right. The accounting of hospital covid cases was just changed last month. The number was inflated. If someone was hospitalized for another issue and tested for covid it was included in the hospitalization numbers. There is no consistency around the world, good and bad science. Who do you trust anymore. To much hypocrisy just look at the superbowl. California was in a state of emergency and mask were required. If you had put $1000 into each of the top 10 coins from January 2017, you’d have $485,000 from BTC, ETH, XRP, LTC, XMR, ETC and DASH if you sold RIGHT NOW at current lows. I don’t think you would care about losing $3000 from REP, MAID and STEEM disappearing since then.
A few projects like Augur (REP) has released a v2 of thier token. And the old token can be redeemed for the new ones. In the case of mergers a new token can be created or one of the two selected and holders of the legacy tokens can redeem or get airdropped the new token. An ongoing thing is Matic and Hermez (HEZ). Polygon bought up Hermez and both tokens are active but do things differently. PoS side chain vs zk rollup. What will happen once the Hermez stuff is more developed?
Filter everything you read here against the website—especially press releases, Coin Market Cap, the whitepaper and articles. You'll develop a sense of what's up. For instance when someone asks what coin to recommend read the list and weigh how often one or two coins get mentioned. Then research them whether or not you plan to invest. One day you'll find a gem. I found ENJ and REP this way. They are gaming and AR infrastructure projects.
I made a very successful trade on it around the Olympics because people were using it in predictions markets. I tried to sell all of it, but Binance only lets you sell a round number, so I am a holder of a decimal amount of REP.

Looking over my portfolio totals from a couple months ago... consolidating some of my alts into ETH/BTC completely saved my portfolio's ass lol. I had much larger bags of VET, RVN, Ankr, Link and AMP which have pretty much all been slaughtered from the point I liquidated them into more Ethereum. My only "regret" is that I also took some profit out of my MATIC & ONE bags to invest them into Tezos, REP and ETH... the former-two have been unfortunately quite disappointing in the downturn compared to matic/one. All things considered though, I would be down at least another 20% had I not evaluated my bloated positions and consolidated into the projects I trusted more.
I just hope 21 REP is worth more than 120 USD

There are some projects in the ETH ecosystem that basically won't work properly until ETH upgrades, so that have upside potential if and when ETH does this. Random example but REP was I think the first ETH ICO and though it no longer has a good rep it is properly decentralized and Vitalik Buterin supports the project and is in fact a user of it (he bet on the 2020 US election using it). It's currently rank 306.
There are projects that do (or try to do) exactly what you're talking about. Augur/REP is the one that comes to mind.
My crazy prediction for the evening before going to sleep: Augur (REP) pulls an Algo in the wee hours of the morning, spiking up it's 24H volume by 2000% and jumping to over $50.

Real story. Back in 2017 I paid 70+ ETH for REP which I think is a pretty interesting project even today. It’s just ETHs fees killed the markets among some other things. I sold that same REP a week or so ago for just a tiny bit over 2 ETH. Repeat this for EVERY 2017 ICO I bought.

I feel this type of post the OP made is overblown a bit. Nothing against your example, but I'm going to use it to show how I think it is overblown. So let's run with your top 10 coins 5 years ago and see what they're all up to. They were BTC, ETH, XRP, LTC, ETC, XMR, DASH, REP, STEEM, WAVES. Let's ignore the 3 that are still in the top 10, BTC, ETH, XRP. LTC is currently ranked #18 and is up 5,000% from 5 years ago. ETC is ranked # 32 and is up 5,300% XMR is ranked # 41 and is up 5,100% Dash is ranked # 73 and is up 2,000% REP is ranked # 198 and is up 380% Steem is ranked #284 and is up 215% Waves is ranked #61 and is up 7,000 %. Had you invested $10,000 in Waves in November of 2016 you'd have around $700,000 5 years later. I haven't heard much buzz about Waves. I don't know what waves is. But over time things in the crypto space (especially things in the top 10) tend to go up even if they fall in popularity a lot. Again nothing against you, I just see these types of posts and thought your example would be a good springboard to give the other side of this argument.

Lol a few years ago I was trading Augur (REP) in Subway between making sandwiches for impatient people with horrible health awareness. Now I'm sitting here worried about dips. 😜 when I zoom out these crypto problems have greatly improved.

I bought 380 ETH at around 8USD back in 2015, I traded it for 400 REP trying to make a quick 10-20% increase in ETH (pretty much day trading). Needles to say, that didn’t work out to well for me.

Non-ethereum-ecosystem tokens: BCH, BTC, DOGE, ZEC; total value < 10% the value of my ETH Non-ETH ethereum ecosystem tokens: KNC, MKR, OMG, REP, total value <10% the value of my ETH Some of those percentage calculations might be a bit out of whack because they're from a couple of years ago, and some coins have done disproportionately well/badly since then. But it's basically correct.

Yeah watch stuff like HBAR, HNT, WAVES, even STORJ, ZEN, and sometimes OMG. They often go against the trend. Then of course there's REP which somehow spikes hardest when the market dips hardest. I still don't know wtf is going on with that one.
